7 Signs You Need Gutter Repair (Before It Gets Expensive)

Gutters fail slowly, then suddenly. Catching these seven signs early is the difference between a $200 gutter repair and a $5,000 foundation problem.

1. Water spilling over the sides

Overflow means a clog or a pitch problem. If cleaning does not fix it, the gutter is likely sloped wrong — water should move toward downspouts at about a quarter inch per 10 feet. A pro can re-pitch a section in under an hour.

2. Sagging or pulling away from the fascia

The hangers are failing — either loosened by age and ice, or spaced too far apart at install (they belong every 2–3 feet). Important: if the fascia board itself is soft or crumbly, that is rot from long-term overflow, and the board needs replacement before re-hanging.

3. Visible rust, cracks, or holes

Small holes can be patched with roofing cement or a metal patch. Widespread rust means the protective coating is gone and the metal is on borrowed time — replacement usually beats serial patching.

4. Peeling paint or staining beneath the gutters

Water is escaping behind or over the gutter and running down the fascia and siding. This is an early-warning sign: the wood behind that paint is already wet.

5. Pools or erosion near the foundation

Walk your perimeter after the next rain. Standing water, washed-out mulch, or carved channels below the roofline mean downspouts are discharging too close — or not at all. Downspout extensions are a cheap fix; foundation repair is not. This is especially critical on the clay soils around Dallas and Charlotte.

6. Separated seams and leaking corners

On sectional gutters, joints fail as sealant ages. A single leaking corner is a quick re-seal; leaks at every joint tell you the system is near end-of-life and seamless gutters deserve a quote.

7. Nails or screws on the ground

Fasteners on the lawn or driveway fell from somewhere — usually your gutter spikes backing out. One or two can be re-driven or upgraded to hidden hangers; a pattern of them means the fascia is losing its grip.
